Salaat (Prayer)

Sahih Muslim : Book 1 Kitab Al-Iman, Number 144]

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira (Radi Allah Anhu) that:
"When, the son of Adam recites the Ayat of Sajdah (prostration) and then falls down in prostration, the Satan goes into seclusion and weeps and says: Alas, and in the narration of Abu Kuraib the words are: Woe unto me, the son of Adam was commanded to prostrate, and he prostrated and Paradise was entitled to him and I was commanded to prostrate, but I refused and am doomed to Hell."

[Sahih Muslim : Book 1 Kitab Al-Iman, Number 146]

It is narrated on the authority of Jabir (Radi Allah Anhu) that he heard the Apostle (may peace and blessings be upon him) saying
"Verily between man and between polytheism and unbelief is the negligence of prayer."

[Sahih Muslim : Book 1 Kitab Al-Iman, Number 147]

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Zubair (Radi Allah Anhu) that he heard Jabir b. 'Abdullah (Radi Allah Anhu) saying. I heard the Messenger of Allah (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ) observing this:
"Between man and polytheism and unbelief is the abandonment of salat."

[Sahih Muslim : Book 1 Kitab Al-Iman, Number 151]

It is narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah b. Mas'ud (Radi Allah Anhu) that he observed. I asked the Messenger of Allah (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ) which deed was the best. He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Prayer at its appointed hour. I (again) said: Then what? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: Kindness to the parents. I (again) said: Then what? He replied: Earnest endeavour (Jihad) in the cause of Allah. And I would have not ceased asking more questions but out of regard (for his feelings).

[Sahih Muslim : Book 1 Kitab Al-Iman, Number 155]

It is reported on the authority of 'Abdullah (Radi Allah Anhu) that the Apostle of Allah (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ) observed:
"The best of' the deeds or deed is the (observance of) prayer at its proper time and kindness to the parents."

Luqman (alaihi salaam) instructions to his Son

[31. Surah Luqman : Ayah 17]

O my son! keep up prayer and enjoin the good and forbid the evil, and bear patiently that which befalls you; surely these acts require courage.

Reciting Surah Al-Hamd (Fatiha) in Prayer

[Sahih Muslim : Book 4, Book Name Kitab Al-Salat, Number 0775]

Abu Huraira (Radi Allah Anhu) reported : The Apostle of Allah (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ) said: If anyone observes prayer in which he does not recite Umm al-Qur'an, It is deficient [he said this three times] and not complete. It was said to Abu Huraira (Radi Allah Anhu) : At times we are behind the Imam. He said: Recite it inwardly, for he had heard the Messenger of Allah (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ) declare that Allah the Exalted had said :
"I have divided the prayer into two halves between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks. When the servant says: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the universe, Allah the Most High says: My servant has praised Me. And when he (the servant) says: The Most Compassionate, the Merciful, Allah the Most High says: My servant has lauded Me. And when he (the servant) says: Master of the Day of judgment, He remarks: My servant has glorified Me. and sometimes He would say: My servant entrusted (his affairs) to Me. And when he (the worshipper) says: Thee do we worship and of Thee do we ask help, He (Allah) says: This is between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for. Then, when he (the worshipper) says: Guide us to the straight path, the path of those to whom Thou hast been Gracious not of those who have incurred Thy displeasure, nor of those who have gone astray, He (Allah) says: This is for My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for."

Significance of Congregational Prayer

[Sahih Al-Bukhari: Volume 3, Book 34 Sales and Trade , Number 330]

Narrated Abu Huraira (Radi Allah Anhu) Allah's Apostle (sal-allahu- alleihi-wasallam ) said:
"The congregational prayer of anyone amongst you is more than twenty (five or twenty seven) times in reward than his prayer in the market or in his house, for if he performs ablution completely and then goes to the mosque with the sole intention of performing the prayer, and nothing urges him to proceed to the mosque except the prayer, then, on every step which he takes towards the mosque, he will be raised one degree or one of his sins will be forgiven. The angels will keep on asking Allah's forgiveness and blessings for everyone of you so long as he keeps sitting at his praying place. The angels will say, 'O Allah, bless him! O Allah, be merciful to him!' as long as he does not do Hadath or a thing which gives trouble to the other." The Prophet further said, "One is regarded in prayer so long as one is waiting for the prayer."

Qualities of those who keep Prayers

[70. Surah Al-Ma'arij : Ayah 19]

Surely man is created of a hasty temperament.

Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him.

And niggardly when good befalls him.

Those who are constant at their prayer.

the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said,
A person who recites
La ilaha illallah
(There is none worthy of worship except Allah)
one hundred times a day,
will on the Day of Resurrection,
be raised with his face shining like the full moon,
and none can surpass him in excellence on that day
except one who recites this Kalimah more than he.

Rules Related to Jumu'ah Salaat

Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi Rahmatullah Alaih )

1. It is preferable that the person who delivers the khutbah also performs the salaat. However, it is permissible for someone else to perform the salaat.

2. It is sunnah to call out the iqaamah and commence with the salaat immediately after the completion of the khutbah. It is makruh-e-tahrimi to engage in any worldly activity between the khutbah and the salaat. If there is a very lengthy gap between the khutbah and the salaat, it will be necessary to repeat the khutbah. However, if the delay is caused because of a Deeni reason, e.g. to show someone a mas'ala , or the wudu of the imam broke and he went to make wudu , or after delivering the khutbah he realized that he had to have a bath, so he went to have a bath - in all these cases it will not be makruh nor will it be necessary to repeat the khutbah.

3. Jumu'ah salaat should be offered with the following intention I intend offering two rakaats fard of jumu'ah salaat.
4. It is preferable for all the people to get together and offer jumu'ah salaat in one musjid. However, it is permissible for the people of one place to offer their jumu'ah salaat in several musjids.

5. If a person joins the salaat in the last qa'dah at the time of reciting the at-tahiyyaat or after sajdah-e-sahw , his joining the jama'at will be correct and he will have to complete his jumu'ah salaat. He will not have to offer zuhr salaat .

6. Some people offer zuhr salaat after the jumu'ah salaat as a precaution. Since the belief of the masses has become corrupted in this regard, they should be strictly stopped from this. However, if a knowledgeable person wishes to offer the zuhr salaat due to some doubt, he should do so without letting anyone come to know of it.

Salatul Tasbih

Benefits of Salat-Ul-Tasbih
Our Beloved Prophet Mohammed (Sallallaho Alihiwassallam) said to his uncle (father’s brother) Sayyiduna Abbass (may Allah be pleased with him) Oh uncle shall I not give you Shall I not grant you Shall I not award you Shall I not do mercy on you When you do 10 things Allah will forgive your sins: of the future and of the past; new and old; those you have forgotten and those you did knowingly; big and small; hidden and revealed. Then he (Sallallaho Alihiwassallam) explained the taught the way to pray Salatul Tasbih and then said if you can pray this salah once a day, if you can not pray once a day then every Friday, and even if this is not possible then once a month and even if this is not possible then once a year and even if this is not possible then at least once in a lifetime (Abu’Dawood & Tirimzi)

How to perform Salatul Tasbih?
This salaat (namaz) is offered in four rakat at a time and can be read in any part of the day and night besides Zawal and Sunrise and Sunset makrooh times, keeping in mind the forbidden times for performing Salat (namaaz). But is is preferred before Zuhr (Fatawa Alamgeeri)

The Tasbih to be read in Salaat-Ul-Tasbeeh:
" Subhaan Allahi Wal Hamdulillahi Wa Laa ilaha illal Laahu Wallahu Akbar "

Method:
Goal is to recite above Tasbih 300 times in Four Rakah with the following method.
In the first rakaat, after reading Sana "Subhaana Kallahumma...", read the above tasbih 15 times.
Now recite Aaoz "Aoozubillah...", Bismillah "Bismillah...", Then read sura Fatiha and a Surah or minimum of three small Ayayhs then read the tasbih 10 times again.
Go to ruku saying Takbeer (Allah Hoo Akbar), after reciting "Subhaana Rabbiyal Azeem" minimum of three times read the tasbih 10 times in Ruku.
Saying "Samee Allahu Liman Hamidah Rabbana Lakal Hamdh" get up from ruku to qiyam position.
Now read the tasbih 10 times.
Go to Sajdah saying Takbeer (Allah Hoo Akbar) and after reciting "Subhaana Rabbiyal A'la" minimum of three times read the tasbih 10 times in Sajdah.
Now go after first Sajdah go to Jalsa (sitting position) saying Takbeer (Allah Hoo Akbar). Sitting in Jalsa read tasbih 10 times.
Go to sajda again saying Takbeer (Allah Hoo Akbar) and after reciting "Subhaana Rabbiyal A'la" minimum of three times read the tasbih 10 times in Sajdah again.
Get up to begin 2nd rakat saying Takbeer (Allah Hoo Akbar).
Do rakah #2 in same fashion, but before reading Bismillah "Bismillah...", and Surah Fatiha, read the tasbih 15 times. Follow the rest as you did in first Rakat.
After second Sajdah of Second Rakat sit in Qaidah Oola (first sitting) read Attahiyat, Durood and Dua then get up for 3rd rakaat without saying Salam.
Begin third Rakat, just like the first Rakat, with Sana "Subhaana Kallahumma...", read the above tasbih 15 times. Follow the rest as you did in first Rakat untill you sit for Qaidah Akihra (last sitting) after second sajdah of fourth Rakah.
In Qaidah Akihra Attahiyat, Durood, Dua finish Salah with Salam.

Special notes for Salat-Ul-Tasbih:
1) Do not count loudly. It will break Salah
2) Do not count on fingers or by holding a Bead Tasbih in hand. It is Makruh.
3) You may count by pressing the fingers as a reminder. For example if you are in Ruku. You me press pinky of your right hand first for the first count, then the finger next to it for second count, then the middle finger for third count, following this method untill you reach the pinky of left hand will give you an exact count of ten. Use the same method in Qayam, Sajdah and Jalsa.
4) If missed a count then make it up in the next posture. For example if forgot to recite Tasbih after Surah in Qayam. Then you may recite Tasbish 20 times instead of 10 in Rukuh after "Subhaana Rabbiyal Azeem". Missed Tasbih cannot be recited in Qayam after ruku and Jalsa between Sajdah. If you missed the Tasbih in Ruku then recite 20 in the first Sajdah instead of the Qayam after rukuh. Similarly if missed the Tasbih in first Sajdah then do not make it up in Jalsa. Instead recite missed tasbih in the second Sajdah. If Tasbih has been missed in last sajdah of second or fourth Rakah then you can recite the missed ones before Attahiyat in Qaidah.
5) If you miss a wajib in Salah and have to do Sajdah Sahaw. You dont have to recite Tasbih in Sajdah sahoo, since the 300 count has been estalished. But if you had missed Tasbih in any of the postures and remeber it now. Then you may recite the missed Tasbih in Sajdah Sahaw now.
6) It is preferable to recite after Surah Fatiha Sura Takathuur in the first raka’, Surah Wal A’sr in the second raka’, Surah Kaferoon (qul ya aiyuhal Kafiroon) in the third and Surah Akhlas (Qul hu Allah-hu ahd) in the fourth raka’. If one does not remember these surah they can recite the ones they prefer.

THE THREE PUNISHMENTS WHILE DYING:

1. He dies humiliated.

2. He dies hungry.

3. He dies thirsty. Even if he drinks the water of all seas he will still be thirsty.

THE THREE PUNISHMENTS IN THE GRAVE:

1. Allah tightens his grave until his chest ribs come over each other.

2. Allah pours on him fire with embers.

3. Allah sets on him a snake called 'the brave', 'the bold' which hits Him

from morning until afternoon for leaving Fajr prayer, from the afternoon until Asr for leaving Dhuhr prayer and so on. With each strike he sinks 70 yards under the ground.

THE THREE PUNISHMENTS ON THE DAY OF JUDGMENT:

1. Allah sends who would accompany him to hell pulling him on the face.

2. Allah gives him an angry look that makes the flesh of his face fall down.

3. Allah judges him strictly and orders him to be thrown in hell.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Allah loves the slave-believer who is poor but virtuous enough to refrain from begging though he has many children."

Loftiness
Al-Tabarani narrated: the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Allah loves lofty matters and superiority and hates inferior matters."

Justice
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "Allah loves that you be just toward your children even when kissing them."

Strength
Muslim narrated: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "The strong believer is better and more loved by Allah than the weak one, but they are both good."

Love for the Sake of Allah
Al-Tabarani, Ibn Ya'la, Ibn Hibban and Al-Hakim narrated: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "If two men love each other for the sake of Allah, the stronger in love to his brother will be more loved by Allah."

Forgiveness
Ibn Iday narrated: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "Allah is All-Forgiving and He loves forgiveness."

Continuous Performance of Righteous Deeds
Bukhari and Muslim narrated: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "The best loved deeds to Allah are the ones that are continuous even if they are not very many."

Loving and Visiting Believers
Malik narrated: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "Allah said: My love is due to those who meet for My sake, visit one another and make any effort for My pleasure."

Exhortation and Advising
Abdullah, the son of Imam Ahmed narrated: It was said: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "The best loved slaves to Allah are those who exhort their slaves."

Love of Virtuous Deeds
Ibn Abi Al-Dunya narrated: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "The best loved slaves to Allah are those who are made to love virtue and loving virtuous deeds is made lovely to them."

Good Manners and Conduct
Al-Tirmidhi narrated: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "The best loved by me and the nearest to me on the seats on the Day of Resurrection are those who have the best manners and conduct amongst you, who are intimate, are on good terms with others and are humble, and the most hated by me and who will be
on the furthest seats from me are those who are talkative and arrogant."

Love of Allah is the basis of worship that should be directed to Him alone. Any other love should be for His sake too. The real love of Allah is to do whatever He ordained and to abandon whatever He forbade, in
addition to following the Prophet's Sunnah.

Whoever obeys someone or something other than Allah and His Messenger, or follows any saying other than theirs, or fears other than Allah or seeks the pleasure of other than Allah, or puts his trust in other than Him, does not love Allah, nor does he love His Messenger. Muslims should also love one another and wish the best for one another. Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said:

"One will not be a true believer unless he loves for his brother what he loves for himself."
(Bukhari, Muslim, Nasa'i, Ahmed and Ibn Majah)

Imam Malik and Imam Ahmed narrated: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: "Allah said: My love is due to those who love one another for My sake."

Get close to Allah

• Start off each day with the waking up supplications, thanking Allah for waking
up in good shape.

• Put Allah first in your life.

• Broaden your horizons - learn 5 new verses from the Holy Qur'an every day,
take up a booklet having supplications and read them.

• If someone says something mean to you, just shrug it off and dismiss it in a
friendly, laid-back manner, and pray that Allah shall forgive him.

• When you get angry, remember Allah, and think how short and worthless life is
to waste in being angry.

• Remember that you can never have too many friends, but you can have few
quality friends that help you fulfill the purpose of your creation (i.e. live
for Allah).

• When you're happy, try to share your happiness with others. Thank Allah for
that, and pray for its continuation.

• When something bad or embarrassing happens to you, just think that it could
always be worse, remember the reward of patience, and thank Allah that it's not
worse than it is.

• Do something extra of goodness once in a while, like feeding a poor person, or
caressing an orphan's head.

• Never stop believing that you can win Allah's love and thus work for it. Then
you can win the love of Allah's slaves.

• Spend some time thinking of Allah's amazing creation.

• Always love those who love Allah unconditionally. This way you will ensure
that you live for Him, love for Him, and hate for Him (those who are enemies of
Him).

• Find the righteous ways to express yourself, and if you think that what you
are about to say shall cause no benefit, maintain silence.

• Every now and then, give yourself a break. Give time to your family and
friends, but always remember Allah and watch that He is watching you.

• Pray for blessing to come to those who are lost, and pray to Allah to guide
them to the true path.

Hug your parents, kiss their hands and heads and always obey them except when
they order to disobey Allah.

• Smile to everyone, for your smile makes a big difference to him or her and you
are rewarded.

• Forgive, forget and smile.

• Tears are not for women only... tears are for all human beings with feelings
remaining in them. Don't restrain your tears when remembering Allah.

• When people criticize your actions and effort, revise your actions and see if
they please Allah or not. If they do; then ignore and remember how the Noble
Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Sahabah (Allah be pleased with them) were
criticized, made fun of and even physically harmed, so have patience.

• Read the Holy Qur'an daily and try to have a schedule for completing it as
much as you could. As you open the Holy Qur'an daily, read with attention not
just passing your eyes through the words.

• Don't let popularity go to your head, for it never lasts and you may lose from
it more than gain.

• Never look down on anybody, for, to Allah, they may be better than you.

• Convey this to all Muslims with the intention of having a healthy society
living for Allah and pray:
"Invite all to the way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching, and
argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious." (Qur'an, 16:125)

Omar Ali Saifuddin Masjid in Brunei. Like several of Brunei's main buildings, the mosque is lit up at night. It was designed by an Italian architect and built in 1958 using Italian marble and granite from Shanghai. The golden dome is 52 meters tall and is visible from most of the city

The current sultan built this mosque in Kiarong to celebrate his silver jubilee. It's officially called "Jame 'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah", the Hassanil Bolkiah mosque. It's even more spectacular than the Omar Ali Saifuddin mosque, and well worth a visit.

The Quba Masjid (Quba' Masjid or Masjid al-Quba, just outside
Medina, Saudi Arabia, is the first Islamic Masjid ever built.
Its first stones were positioned by the prophet Muhammad on
his emigration from the city of Makkah to Medina
and the Masjid was completed by his companions. Muhammad
spent more than 20 nights in this Masjid (after migrating)
praying qasr (a short prayer) while waiting for Imam Ali whose
house was behind this Masjid.

King Faisal Masjid in Islamabad, Pakistan,by Turkish architect Vedat Dalokay,
was financed by approximately 1976 SAR130 million (2006 US$120 million) from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia The Shah Faisal Masjid in Islamabad, Pakistan, is the largest Masjid in South Asia. It is a well-known masjid in the Islamic world and is renowned for both its immense size and its architecture.

The Malmo Mosque is one of Sweden's main mosques located in the outskirts of Malmo in southern Sweden. It was inaugurated in 1984 as the first mosque in Scandinavia .In connection to the mosque is the Islamic center which contains an islamic school and library. It serves as a place of worship for some 55,000 muslims living in the area.

There have been three arson attacks on the mosque. On 2005-09-18 and on 2005-10-21 the fires were put out quickly and only minor damage was done, but on 2003-04-28 attack the mosque was more severely damaged and other buildings at the Islamic center were totally destroyed. Malmo is one of the main centers for Swedish Muslims

The Ibrahim-al-Ibrahim Mosque, also known as the King Fahd bin Abdulaziz al-Saud Mosque or the Mosque of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques is a mosque at Europa Point, at the southern tip of Gibraltar. The building was a gift from King Fahd of Saudi Arabia and took two years to build at a cost of around five million pounds. It was officially inaugurated on 8 August 1997. Around seven per cent of Gibraltar's population are Muslims; a total of approximately 2,000 people. The mosque complex also contains a school, library, and lecture hall

The Great Masjid of Djenné, MALIis host to an annual festival. The Great Mosque of Djenné is the largest mud brick or adobe building in the world and is considered by many architects to be the greatest achievement of the Sudano-Sahelian architectural style, albeit with definite Islamic influences.

The mosque is located in the city of Djenné, Mali on the flood plain of the Bani River. The first mosque on the site was built in the 13th century, but the current structure dates from 1907. As well as being the centre of the community of Djenné, it is one of the most famous landmarks in Africa. Along with the "Old Towns of Djenné" it was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.

Lailat-ul-qadar, 'Night of Power'

The most unluckiest person in the world..
is the one who did not make it to forgive all his past sins in month of Ramadhaan.

How many people are laying in there Grave, who thought they can make it to Ramadhaan this year. They never made it !!

We are lucky we got a chance this year !!

The Prophet (SAW) said: "Whosoever reaches the month of Ramadhaan and does not have his sins forgiven, and so enters the Fire, then may ALLAH distance him."[Ahmad (2/246) and Bayhaqi (4/204)]

Its not too late, Also we have the 'Night of Power' ( Lailat-ul-Qadr ) in hand

The Messenger (SAW) said: "Whoever prays the Night of Qadr with Eemaan (faith) and hoping for its reward, ALLAH will forgive him all his previous sins." [Bukhaaree and Muslim]

'Lailat-ul-Qadr' or 'Night of Power' a very important occasion in the history of Islam and in our personnel lives.

The Night Of Power is better for you to live, to experience and to enjoy than one thousand months of your personal life. Even if you were to live one thousand months ( 83.3 years) with sincerity, dedication, and sacrifices and with good intentions and deeds, the Night Of Power is still far better for you to live and to enjoy.

ALLAH says in the Qur'an in Surah Al-Qadr:
"We have indeed revealed this (message) in the Night of Power. And what will explain to thee what the Night of Power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. Therein come down the angels and the spirit by God's permission, on every errand: Peace! This until the rise of Morn." (97:1-5)

The Night of Power is a night of blessings ALLAH has blessed this Night. Therefore whosoever is interested in receiving the blessings of ALLAH may look forward to the Night of Power.
Anyone who seeks the Night of Power and lives it, all his/her sin will be erased. This is, as if, he/she is, born again now free of all sin and mistakes.

Aa'isha ® said: "When the last ten days of Ramadhaan arrived the Messenger (SAW) used to abstain (from contact a with his wives) and he would establish the nights. He would awaken (his family) to do the same also." [Bukhaaree and Muslim]

I am sure every one of us would like to live a life free of sins an free of mistakes. Everyone would like to meet ALLAH on the Day of Judgment without sins. Every one of us would like to feel that he/she is reborn today. All of us wish to rejuvenate ourselves, and to start a new year with a fresh outlook and a fresh life. Every one of us wants to live a pure life and everyone wants to purify himself/herself without anguish or torment.

The Night of Power is one of the best way in which a person is to achieve all these ideals. For this reason may I suggest that you start looking for it, so you will be able to observe it and enjoy it.

Imam Bukhari reports from 'Aishah that the Messenger of ALLAH (may ALLAH bless him and grant him peace) would tighten his waist-cloth (i.e. detach himself from his wives), spend the night in worship and awake his family, during the last ten nights of Ramadan.

As far as determining the Night of Power (Lailat-ul-Qadr) is concerned, it has been reported to be during one of the odd numbered nights of the last ten days of Ramadhaan, i.e. 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th or 29th. It has been emphasized that it is most likely to be the 27th night. But this doesn't mean you should stick to 27th night only.

The Signs of the Night of Qadr .

The Messenger of ALLAH (SWT) described the morning of the night of Qadr so that the muslims can know which night it is.
Ubayy ® said : "On the morning of the night of Qadr the sun would rise without any beams ; (it is like) a wash basin until it raises." [Muslim]
Abu Hurairah ® said : "We mentioned the night of Qadr to the Messenger of ALLAH (SWT) and he said: "Which of you remembers when the moon rises and it is like half a bowl ." [Muslim]
Ibn Abbaas ® said that the Messenger of ALLAH (SWT) said : "The night of Qadr is a night of generosity and happiness, it is not hot and neither is it cold. The sun comes up in its morning weak, reddish." [Tabaranee, Ibn Khuzaimah and Bazzaar]
To summarize, I would like to mention the following:

1. The sun rises early in the morning without rays.
2. Rain may fall either during the night or during the day of that night.
3. During night the sky will be lightly foggy.
4. The sky will be slightly lighted without reflections and without rays.
5. The angels and Gabriel all descend down onto earth for many purposes.

If you are interested in living the Night of Power, let me remind you of some of the things that you might have to do.

a. Recitation of the Our'an.
b. Prayers-Nafl after Taraweeh.
c. Remembrance of ALLAH or zikr
d. Supplication or Du'a for you and for others.
e. Reading books of Hadeeth so as to enjoy the sayings of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

In Sahih Bukhari (6/521), there is an amazing piece of advice from the Prophet (may ALLAH bless him and grant him peace): "Recite the Quran as long as your hearts agree on it; if you disagree about it, stop reciting it (for the time being)" -- studying the Quran should bring people together!

Ten days are the last part of the month and a person's actions are based on his last ones. So perhaps, he will encounter the night of Al-Qadr, while standing in prayer for ALLAH and thus have all his past sins forgiven.

The Night of Power is a very important occasion in Islam. Everyone is asked to live it and to enjoy it. This Night is a ' Night of Mercy', a ' Night of Blessing ', a ' Night of Peace ' and a 'Night of Guidance '. It is a ' Night of Unification ' between the finite world of ours and the Infinite Universe of the Unseen.

May ALLAH give us the strength, the power, the courage and the effort to do our best to obey ALLAH and to follow His teachings. May ALLAH guide us and may ALLAH strengthen our Emaan May ALLAH help us to live another year with sincerity and devotion. May ALLAH make us realize that one year of our life is over and that we are one year closer to our graves .

Let us wake up and do our best to please ALLAH in our daily life. Let us ask Almighty ALLAH forgiveness. Ameen.

And one must incite, animate and persuade his family to perform acts of worship, especially in these great times in which no one neglects it except that he has been deprived. What is more incredible than this is that while the people are performing prayer and making tahajjud, some individuals spend their time in forbidden gatherings and sinful events. This is indeed the greatest loss . We ask ALLAH for his protection.

So we ask ALLAH to grant us the ability to change ourselves for the better, during this blessed month, and not to be of those who are prevented from His Mercy and forgiveness. Indeed He is the One who Hears and He is the One to Respond.

We take a break from our jobs for almost everything in life. Why not this time to focus on worshiping and thanking our Creator.

If this is not possible at least take a few days off if you can. This can make it easier to stay awake at night to do extra Ibadah. Whatever you loose is very negligible in front of whatever you gain from this Night.

Which is the True Religion of God?
Each person is born in a circumstance which is not of his
own choosing. The religion of his family or the ideology
of the state is thrust upon him from the very beginning of
his existence in this world. By the time he reaches his
teens, he is usually fully brain‐washed into believing that
the beliefs of his particular society are the correct beliefs
that everyone should have. However, when some people
mature and are exposed to other belief‐systems, they begin
to question the validity of their own beliefs. The
seekers of truth often reach a point of confusion upon
realizing that each and every religion, sect, ideology and
philosophy claims to be the one and only correct way for
man. Indeed, they all encourage people to do good. So,
which one is right? They cannot all be right, since each
claims all others are wrong. Then how does the seeker of
truth choose the right way?
God gave us all minds and intellects to enable us to make
this crucial decision. It is the most important decision in
the life of a human being. Upon it depends his future.
Consequently, each and every one of us must examine
dispassionately the evidence presented, and choose what
appears to be right until further evidence arises.

This year, as they have for more than fourteen centuries, Muslims from across the world performed the Hajj, the pilgrimage to the Holy Mosque in Makkah. The standing at Arafat, the most important day of the Hajj, fell on April 6. Although the rituals of the Hajj are exclusively performed in and around Makkah, most of the more than two million Muslims who complete them also undertake a pilgrimage to Madinah.

The Prophet's Mosque dominates the Madinah skyline. King Fahd, who oversaw the latest expansion of the mosque, wrote an inscription on the base of the last of the 23-foot brass crescents that top its six new minarets

For the world's more than one billion Muslims, the Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is the spiritual high point of a Muslim's life to visit the Ka'abah, the House of God, in the Holy Mosque, towards which Muslims around the globe face to pray five times a day. On the other hand, Muslims are drawn to Madinah, not as a religious duty as in the case of Makkah, but out of love and respect for God's last Prophet. For it is in this city that the Prophet Muhammad established the first Islamic community, spent the last years of his life, and where he and many of his companions are buried.

Known by more than 90 names that generally denote respect and devotion, the city is most commonly called Madinah (city), short for Madinah Al-Nabi (City of the Prophet) or Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah (the Radiant or Enlightened City), a reference to its association with the Prophet.

Although Madinah came to prominence with the introduction of Islam, its roots date back hundreds of years into the pre-Islamic era when it was known as Yathrib. Situated on a plain with aquifers fed by runoff from the surrounding hills, the city had abundant water supplies that fed vast date palms and vegetable gardens. The availability of food and water made Madinah an important reprovisioning point for caravans that plied the commercial routes from the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula along the Red Sea to Syria and Egypt. Its inhabitants sold food to these passing caravans and, over time, became involved in trade.

Yathrib may have languished in relative anonymity were it not for events that took place in Makkah, more than 200 miles to the south, at the turn of the seventh century AD. What was taking place in Makkah would not only transform Yathrib, but also much of the known world.

Unlike Yathrib and other oasis settlements that relied on agriculture, Makkah's primary significance was as a pilgrimage site. Large numbers of people visited the Ka'abah, the House of God built by the Prophet Abraham. However, at this time monotheism had been swept aside, and the Ka'abah housed numerous idols belonging to the inhabitants of Makkah and nearby tribes.

It was against this backdrop that the Prophet Muhammad was born in 570 AD in Makkah and received the first verses of the Holy Qur'an in the year 610. Based on the worship of God, the absolute and single Creator, Islam rejected the idolatry that was prevalent in Makkah at the time. As such, Islam was viewed as a threat to the livelihood and power base of the ruling tribe of Makkah, and its growing number of followers were harassed, persecuted and threatened.

During this period, leaders of Yathrib, familiar with the Prophet Muhammad's reputation for honesty and sincerity, had sent envoys asking that he mediate a dispute between two powerful tribes. Impressed by the Prophet's character and teachings, these envoys soon accepted Islam and were followed by other converts. Observing the growing threat to their fellow Muslims in Makkah, the people of Yathrib offered a safe haven to them, and beginning in 620 AD, the Prophet Muhammad started sending groups of Muslims to live in Yathrib.

Having learned of a plot to murder him, the Prophet Muhammad himself left Makkah for Yathrib, arriving in the city in September 622. This event is known as the Hijrah (emigration). The Prophet's arrival in Yathrib was a turning point in world history. It marked the establishment of the first Islamic state and the rapid growth of the new faith. From then on, the city became Madinah Al-Nabi, and the date of the Prophet's arrival there marked the first year of the Islamic calendar.

With the emigration, Madinah became a center of activity. Upon his approach to the oasis in 622, the Prophet established the first mosque in Islam at Quba, a village on the outskirts of Madinah. Called Masjid Al-Taqwa (Mosque of Piety), the mosque still stands, albeit modernized and enlarged.

Once settled in Madinah, the Prophet built another mosque adjacent to his house. Called Masjid Al-Nabawi (the Prophet's Mosque), the first structure on today's site was a simple one supported by the trunks of standing palm trees, and was built by the Prophet himself. It was this mosque at which the Prophet and his companions prayed, and which soon became the social and economic center of the city and the Islamic state. With the growth of Islam, more mosques were established throughout the city and its environs.

The first eight years of the Hijrah were spent strengthening the ummah (Islamic community) in Madinah and in warding off the aggression of the armies sent from Makkah. In the eighth year of the Hijrah, 630 AD, the Prophet and his followers entered Makkah without bloodshed. He ordered the removal of all idols from the Ka'abah, and within weeks all inhabitants of Makkah had accepted Islam. He returned to Makkah in 632 for his final pilgrimage, the rituals of which are followed by all Muslims who have since performed the Hajj.

While the Holy Mosque in Makkah was the spiritual center of Islam, Madinah became the administrative hub of the new Islamic state during the Prophet Muhammad's lifetime. It was from here that the successful campaign to convince the tribes to abandon idolatry was waged.

It was also in Madinah that the Prophet's companions compiled the verses of the Holy Qur'an and collected the Hadith (teachings and sayings of the Prophet) that would serve as the basis of Shari'ah (Islamic law).

And it was also in Madinah that the Prophet died on June 8, 632, and where he was buried in his house adjoining the mosque he had helped build with his own hands.

After his death, the first three caliphs, Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq, Omar Ibn Al-Khattab and Othman Ibn Affan, continued to administer from Madinah the expanding Islamic nation, which had by now spread to Persia and Syria. In time, Abu Bakr and Omar were buried in a separate chamber next to the Prophet. Othman and several members of the Prophet's immediate family were buried at the nearby Baqi' Cemetery.

The administrative and political demands of a growing empire, one that over the next hundred years would reach from Spain and Morocco in the west through the Middle East, to the Indian Subcontinent and beyond in the east, forced subsequent Islamic leaders to move their capital away from Madinah.

Although its political and commercial fortunes declined in the following centuries, the City of the Prophet continued to hold a special place in the hearts of Muslims. The small mosque the Prophet had established next to his house was enlarged by various Muslim rulers over time and continued to draw pilgrims from around the world as Islam's second holiest site.

Yet the instability and turmoil that had gripped the Arabian Peninsula in recent centuries made the pilgrimage to Makkah and Madinah a demanding and often dangerous undertaking, with the result that the number of Muslims visiting the holy sites each year seldom exceeded 40,000, even into the early part of this century.

In 1926 a defining event took place that made the City of the Prophet more accessible to Muslims and also changed the fortunes of its inhabitants. In that year, King Abdul Aziz Ibn Abdul Rahman Al-Saud extended his protection to Makkah and Madinah in his effort to unify the tribes of the Arabian Peninsula. In 1932 he accomplished his goal and founded the modern Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

King Abdul Aziz's rule brought an immediate end to the turmoil and instability that prevailed in the peninsula. For the first time in 13 centuries, pilgrims and merchants could travel safely to the holy cities and, indeed, anywhere else in the Kingdom, without concern for their lives and property.

As the Kingdom entered a new era of development, which began after the end of World War II, it started building roads, ports and airports throughout the country, further facilitating travel to Makkah and Madinah.

With the attention lavished by King Abdul Aziz and his successors on the holy cities, Madinah blossomed, undergoing a veritable transformation. Whereas once only the adventurous dared undertake a journey to the city, the trip became safe and secure, and could now be completed with little anxiety. With the arrival of more pilgrims from across Saudi Arabia and the globe King Abdul Aziz realized that the Prophet's Mosque was in dire need of expansion.

The original mosque, built with mud bricks and tree trunks in 622, covered an area of 8,661 square feet. The caliphs Omar and Othman expanded the mosque in 638 and 650, respectively. Further expansions were undertaken in the early and late parts of the eighth century AD. By this time, the rooms in which the Prophet and his companions Abu Bakr and Omar were buried were incorporated into the mosque and a dome had been built over the rooms.

For eleven centuries no major additional improvements were made to the mosque, although various Muslim rulers funded renovation work and endowments for the mosque's operations and upkeep. The last expansion before the modern era was completed in 1849 by Sultan Abdul Majid the Second, bringing the mosque's total area to a little more than 120,000 square feet.

In 1950, Saudi Arabia undertook the largest expansion project the mosque had ever witnessed. It more than doubled the size of the complex to accommodate the ever-increasing number of Muslims visiting the site, which grew steadily year by year, reaching more than 100,000 in 1955.

The establishment of a modern infrastructure and improved accommodations for visitors saw the number of pilgrims to Makkah and Madinah increase rapidly beginning in the 1960s. By 1970, the number of pilgrims had reached one million. In 1973, King Faisal Ibn Abdul Aziz ordered that the west side of the mosque be shaded from the sun. Although this project increased the area in which visitors to the mosque could pray, it was only a temporary solution.

A more permanent arrangement for the mosque was needed. A panel of experts headed by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Fahd Ibn Abdul Aziz launched a three-year study to formulate plans for a major expansion of the mosque. Once the plans were approved and preparations completed, construction began in earnest in 1985.

The project would take seven years of continuous work. Once completed in 1992, it expanded the mosque's area approximately 15-fold to 1.78 million square feet, allowing more than 700,000 visitors to pray simultaneously.

A similar expansion project for the Holy Mosque in Makkah, undertaken concurrently with that for the Prophet's Mosque, more than doubled its size, allowing more than one million worshippers. The implementation of these two projects would cost more than 70 billion Saudi riyals (18.66 billion U.S. dollars).

The expansion project for the Prophet's Mosque involved new buildings on three sides of the existing structure, and a vast courtyard surrounding it paved with marble and inlaid with geometric Islamic designs. The new buildings provide extensive roofed prayer areas. Within the new structure there are also 27 courtyards open to the sky. In inclement weather concrete domes slide into place to cover these courtyards. Two larger, open courtyards each have six mechanized, retractable umbrellas that are opened or closed depending on the weather.

The retractable domes and umbrellas, as well as the other electrical and mechanical systems in the complex, are monitored and controlled from the computerized automation center in the basement. This center also controls the air conditioning system, one of the largest and most innovative of its kind. Located at a plant 4.3 miles away, the system pumps 17,000 gallons of chilled water per minute through pipes into the basement of the mosque, where it is used to cool air circulating throughout the complex.

The expansion project added six new minarets to the mosque's four existing ones. Each of the new minarets is 360 feet high, topped by a 23-foot brass crescent weighing close to five tons.

Several kinds of marble and granite were used to build the vast, open courtyard plaza that surrounds the new structure. Lights mounted on marble and brass pillars illuminate the entire area at night.

With the completion of the expansion project, the Prophet's Mosque can easily accommodate the more than two million worshippers that congregate around the Hajj season and visit throughout the year.

As the mosque has expanded in recent decades, so has the city that surrounds it. The City of the Prophet is no longer the small town enclosed by walls that it was at the turn of the century. Today, it is a vibrant city of half a million people where the old and the new blend in harmony, complementing each other. The religious and historic sites in and around the city have been preserved and renovated to allow visitors to appreciate their role in the history of the Kingdom and Islam.

At the same time, new amenities and services have been established to facilitate the city's social and physical growth. As Madinah slowly expanded in every direction, the provision of adequate water supplies was a primary concern. The Kingdom addressed this issue not only by tapping the aquifers that have traditionally supplied the city with water, but also by laying massive pipes to bring in water from desalination plants along the Red Sea. These projects have met all the city's water requirements. Furthermore, water recycling has allowed the city to establish more than 60 major parks and playgrounds where residents and their families can relax and take refuge from the heat.

Once only accessible by caravan trails, the city is now an integral part of the network of modern highways and roads that connect all major urban centers in the Kingdom. An airport established seven miles northeast of the city connects the City of the Prophet to other cities in the Kingdom as well as the world.

For the past 14 centuries, Madinah has been a center of learning, attracting Islamic scholars and students from around the world. Today, a vast, modern educational structure consisting of hundreds of elementary, intermediate and secondary schools enrolls the city's young. Moreover, the Islamic University, established in 1966, draws thousands of students from Madinah, other parts of the Kingdom and more than 100 countries around the world.

In 1985, King Fahd inaugurated a unique complex near Madinah. The King Fahd Holy Qur'an Printing Complex was built on over 37 acres of land to produce high-quality copies of the Holy Book in large numbers. Employing some 1,500 scholars, artists and technicians, the facility now produces more than 14 million copies of the Holy Qur'an in Arabic and six other major languages, as well as 200,000 sets of audio cassettes of the Holy Book each year. These are distributed free to visitors to the two holy mosques and are donated to mosques, religious institutions, schools and universities in the Kingdom. Millions of copies of the Holy Qur'an are also donated each year to mosques and Islamic centers throughout the world.

Madinah also boasts a modern health care network of nine major hospitals and 76 health care centers, which provide services to residents as well as religious pilgrims. During the Hajj season, numerous temporary health centers are set up to ensure that permanent facilities are not over- burdened and quality care is available to all in need.

A state-of-the-art telecommunications system that supports both land and mobile telephones, computers and facsimile and telex machines is maintained by the Ministry of Posts, Telegraphs and Telephones for residents and visitors.

An ancient oasis, Madinah continues to cultivate extensive gardens and farms that produce a variety of dates and vegetables.

Like the city itself, Madinah's traditional date farms and vegetable gardens have also prospered. Of the 500 varieties of dates produced in the Kingdom, some 120 are cultivated here. Indeed, some of the most popular varieties, including the Ajwa, are grown primarily in the date groves surrounding the city.

While the lives of the people of Madinah continue to revolve around the Prophet's Mosque, and in the service of its visitors, the city's inhabitants now support a dynamic business and commercial sector. Thousands of new stores and shops have been established in recent decades to cater to the needs of visitors and inhabitants alike.

In the latter part of the twentieth century, Madinah has evolved into a modern urban center while retaining its strong religious and cultural values.

The Qur'an ("Qor-Ann") is a Message from Allah (swt) to humanity. It was transmitted to us in a chain starting from the Almighty Himself (swt) to the angel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad (saw). This message was given to the Prophet (saw) in pieces over a period spanning approximately 23 years (610 CE to 632 CE). The Prophet (saw) was 40 years old when the Qur'an began to be revealed to him, and he was 63 when the revelation was completed. The language of the original message was Arabic, but it has been translated into many other languages.

The Qur'an is one of the two sources which form the basis of Islam. The second source is the Sunnah of the Prophet (saw). What makes the Qur'an different from the Sunnah is primarily its form. Unlike the Sunnah, the Qur'an is literally the Word of Allah (swt), whereas the Sunnah was inspired by Allah but the wording and actions are the Prophet's (saw). The Qur'an has not been expressed using any human's words. Its wording is letter for letter fixed by no one but Allah.

Prophet Muhammad (saw) was the final Messenger of Allah to humanity, and therefore the Qur'an is the last Message which Allah (swt) has sent to us. Its predecessors such as the Torah, Psalms, and Gospels have all been superseded. It is an obligation - and blessing - for all who hear of the Qur'an and Islam to investigate it and evaluate it for themselves. Allah (swt) has guaranteed that He will protect the Qur'an from human tampering, and today's readers can find exact copies of it all over the world. The Qur'an of today is the same as the Qur'an revealed to Muhammad (saw) 1400 years ago.

The Qur'an was revealed in pure Arabic to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) over a period of twenty-three years ending in 632 A.D., the year he passed away. The first revelation was only five verses, the first five verses of Chapter 96. Among the very early revelations are Surah 73, 74, 80 and 97. The revelations were sent by Allah, Subhanahu wa Ta'ala (SWT), the creator and sustainer of the universe, and transmitted to him by the Archangel Jibril (as) (Gabriel). The revelations he received were sometimes a few verses, a part of a chapter or the whole chapter. Some revelations came down in response to an inquiry by the nonbelievers. The ordering of the Qur'an is not the same as the revelations. Archangel Jibril (as) taught the ordering of Ayat and Surahs (refer to Surah 75) as he transmitted the revelations to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

The Qur'an speaks in the first person, i.e., Allah's commandments to its creation. The Qur'an also uses the royal "We" for Allah's commandments. The main theme of the Qur'an and all previous revelations has been the absolute oneness of Allah, the creator and sustainer of the universe, who is without partner(s). Allah (Glory be to Him) did not beget nor was He begotten. The Qur'anic verses address people in a variety of ways depending on the context. It says "O mankind" and "O people" in a general sense addressing to all people, and in other instances "O believers" for those who have already accepted the message of Qur'an.

The Qur'an is the direct Word of Allah and it does not contain a single alphabet from anyone, even Prophet Muhammad. The sayings of Prophet Muhammad are contained in separate compilations known as Hadith, and include his deeds, lifestyle, and decisions on a variety of issues. The Qur'an and Hadith form the foundation of daily life of a practicing Muslim. The Qur'an has not changed by even an alphabet since its revelation fourteen centuries ago. Allah (SWT) has promised in the Qur'an that He will preserve it to the end of time. It is also for this reason there is no need for any new prophet or revelation (guidance) to come to humankind. The Qur'an is read in Arabic with great emphasis on the accuracy of recitation, including the recognition of diacritical marks and places where one pauses momentarily or stops.

The Arabic word Surah is loosely translated as chapter and Ayah as verse for the English readers who are unfamiliar with Qura'nic concepts. The Ayah (plural Ayat) means a sign. Those who have read the meaning of the Qur'an thoroughly and have had time to reflect upon them appreciate the word ayah as it is truly a sign from Allah (SWT), the lord of the universe, the absolute, without any partners or associate. Allah is the personal name of God, the Lord of the universe, the owner of the day of judgement. The word Allah is not subject to gender (male or female, such as god or goddess) or plurality (such as gods or goddesses). This word is found in Semitic languages, spoken by Prophets (I'sa) Jesus and (Musa) Moses, peace be upon them both (as).

According to the Qur'an, Allah sent Numerous Nabi (prophets) and Rasool (messengers), i.e., those prophets who were also given revelations or books from Allah. Among them are many that are also mentioned in the old and new testaments, and others that are specifically mentioned in the Qur'an. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) came about six centuries after Prophet I'sa (Jesus) and was the last prophet of Allah. He is the seal of the Prophets. The words Islam and Muslim are defined in the Qur'an, and Allah (SWT) states in the Qur'an that the religion of all Prophets was Islam and called them Muslims. Specifically, Prophet Abraham, among others, is called a Muslim in the Qur'an. The word Islam means total submission (to the will and commandments of Allah). It is derived from the root word SLM and salam means peace (shalom in Hebrew). A Muslim is one who submits to the will and commandments of Allah. The Qur'an is sent for both humankind and Jinns.

Zakat means growth (nam'a), blessings (barakah), purification (taharah), or appreciation (madh). It is called zakat because one's wealth grows through the blessings of giving part of it and the prayer of those who receive it. Zakat purifies its giver of his/her sins and is clearly ordered by God. The Quran says "Take alms of their wealth and make them pure and clean " (9:103).

There are two main type of zakat:

1. Zakat on self (zakat al-fitr or fitra). This zakat is caused by breaking the fasting at the end of Ramadan. it is sometime called sadaqat al-fitr. Zakat ul-fitr is leived on individual and not on his/her wealth. Zakat ul-Fitr is mandatory for every Muslim, young, old, men, women, free and captive.
1. Zakat on wealth(zakat ul-mal).

Zakat was instituted among Muslims to carry out a variety of objectives. Islam ordained zakat to achieve, through it, social justice and sublime moral and spiritual values. It is a criterion for the believers and a way to success in this life and the next. Allah says, "Who establishes worship and spend of that we have bestowed upon them, these are the true believers. For them are grades of honor with their Lord, and forgiveness, and a beautiful provision". [8:3-4]

Throughout our history, whenever Muslims truthfully applied the system of zakat, as Allah and His Messenger have ordained, the splendid objectives of zakat were fulfilled and its great effects appeared within the lives of individuals and the society. We must remember that first and foremost, zakat is an act of worship. Giving zakat is an act of obedience to the command of Allah, and a fulfillment of His covenant. The giver hopes that by giving it, he will receive a good reward in the Hereafter, and the growth and blessings of his wealth in this life.

Therefore Zakat is:

A transfer of posessions and not a favor or a gift, given by the owner to those who deserve it, in accordance with the Qur'an and the Sunnah.

Considered In a Specified Portion of the wealth, determined according to specific principles.

Not due on all types of wealth there are certain conditions that should be fulfilled in order not to pay zakat on one's wealth.

Due on wealth that has fulfilled the nisab (limit of exemption or minimum amount of one's holding that is liable to zakat). Having this condition ensure social justice and reduces the differences among social classes. It also guarantees sufficient equalization.

Moneys collected that is disposed of in a specific way, to specific persons.

Zakat is also purification from greed purification from greed, envy and greed. Islam recognizes the instinctive love of wealth and love of the self; stinginess is a part of what humans are, "And human inner selves are swayed by greed". For Allah says, "By no means shall you attain righteousness (and reward) unless you spend of that which you love". When one pays zakat on one's wealth, he/she fulfills his/her responsibility towards society and the needy, he/she does this to comply with his Lord's instructions, "And those in whose wealth there is a known right, for the needy who asks and for those who are deprived of (wealth)".(9:103)

It improves an individual's social spirit. Zakat is true and practical expression of Islamic brotherhood. When Muslims pay zakat, the society becomes like one family. The prophet (SAW), said, "The believers in their mutual kindness, compassion and sympathy are just like one body. When one of the limbs is afflicted, the whole body responds to it with sleeplessness and fever". (Bukhari and Muslim) Zakat also removes hatred and envy from the hearts of the poor for they know that their right from the wealthy is preserved. The prophet, sallallaahu alayhe wa sallam, said, "The relationship of the believer with another believer is like (the brick of) a building, each strengthens the others". (Bukhari and Muslim)

It cleanses sins. Zakat brings forth the good and Allah's Mercy, "And My Mercy embraces all things. That (Mercy) I shall ordain for those who are righteous and give zakat, and those who believe in our verses (and signs)". [7:156] On the other hand, in materialistic societies people live a life of chaos and loss. Within these societies, hatred and malice grow, crimes are perpetrated, and virtues are killed.

It spreads tranquility and peace. Zakat is social security for the weak and a protection for the society against disintegration.

It improves one's personality.Paying zakat and helping other Muslims makes the one more comfortable with his role in the community. He feels victorious over his weakness (like greed) and Satan, who try to keep him/her away from doing good deeds.

It brings about love. When people learn about the wealthy paying zakat and their willingness to help others, they quite naturally begin to love them because of this.

It purifies wealth. The Prophet (saw), said, "Whenever people refrain from paying the zakat due on their wealth, they will be deprived of rain. If it were not for the sake of their cattle, they would not receive rain". (Ibn Majah and Al-Hakim) Only by paying the right of Allah and the right of the poor from zakat is the wealth purified from decreasing, or from destruction.

It is a test from allah to his servants. People naturally love wealth, but the sign of true faith is to sacrifice what is loved for the sake of Allah. Therefore, zakat is a critical test to one's faith.

It motivates hard work. Zakat incites people to work and pay zakat. When this is done, they become loyal to their community. This in turn strengthens the community and unites its members.

Amount of Zakat Due:

How Has To Pay Zakat?

Scholars have established special conditions or requirements for zakat to be incumbent on the individual. Some of these conditions are related to the person that pays the zakat and others to the property itself.

1. Islam: Zakat is only incumbent on Muslims. This is because it is one of the pillars of Islam. Allah says, "Take from their wealth a sadaqa in order to purify them and sanctify them with it, and invoke Allah for them. Verily! Your invocations are a source of security for them". [9:103] This verse is addressing Muslims and not the disbelievers. This shows that zakat is not mandatory upon the disbelievers and it is not to be collected from them unless they embrace Islam.

2. Takleef : (Legal Competency for Obligation). Some scholars have placed the conditions of buloogh (reaching the age of puberty) and sanity (intellectual and emotional stability) for the mandate of zakat. They say that, "zakat is not mandatory on the wealth of those who are not mukallaf (competent persons obligated to observe the precepts of religion)." This is so because the zakat is an act of worship and acts of worship require intention. However, these people cannot have any intention considered confident or reliable. Other acts of worship such as salah, fasting and hajj are also not required from them.

3. Intention: The validity of zakat depends upon the expression of one's intention. The one paying the zakat should pay it, believing that it is an obligation to be discharged. The Prophet, sallallaahu wa alayhe wa sallam, said, "The value of one's deeds is determined by one's intentions". Zakat is an act of worship. Therefore, it should be associated with intention.

4. Complete Possesion Of Wealth: The real owner of the wealth is Allah and Allah has, out of His Grace and Generosity, granted man succession to it. He has entrusted man with it so that man can use it and dispose if it according to the Law of the Real Owner. Allah says, "And give them something out of the wealth of Allah which He has bestowed upon you". [24:3] He also says, "Believe in Allah and His Messenger, and spend of that whereof He has made you trustees". [57:7]

The meaning of complete possession of wealth, in this instance, is that wealth is within the hands of a particular person and that such wealth is free from any rights by others. This person has the right to dispose of and use the wealth as he wills. He must have the possibility of benefiting from his possession and must be personally designated. Two important concerns should be noted regarding this condition:

The money is designated to its owners. This meaning is indicated in many verses in the Qur'an among which is the following: "Take from their wealth a sadaqa" [9:103] and "And those in whose wealth there is a known right for the needy who ask, and for those who are deprived (of wealth)". [70:24-25] This designation suggests possession. They may use and dispose of their wealth, as they will.

Zakat is to give possession of the wealth to its recipients. In order to do so, the person should possess the wealth. How can a person give away money to others that does not belong to him? There are also other circumstances and conditions under which, a person's wealth or a portion thereof, is not liable for zakat.

Wealth With No Owner: Such as the moneys of the state collected by zakat, taxation or other sources. There is no zakat on these moneys because they belong to the entire community, including the poor.

Waqf: (endowments) of a public sector. Moneys from sources such as masajid, orphans, schools, etc. are not subject to zakat according to sound opinions. Nor is the one-third or less portion from the will of the deceased.

Unlawful Wealth: Unlawful wealth may include wealth attained from theft, extortion, forgery, bribery, monopoly, riba, cheating, etc. One should return such moneys to their rightful owners for their inheritors. If one does not know who they are, then the moneys should all be given to the poor and not kept. If a person is insistent upon keeping possession of this type of wealth, and the wealth is still present after a complete year has passed, it then becomes liable to zakat.

When a debt is involved, who is responsible to pay the zakat on it, the lender or the debtor? Is the debt even subject to zakat? The majority of scholars have classified debts into two categories: the good debt and the bad debt.

A debt that is acknowledged by the debtor with a willingness to repay it is a good debt. The lender should pay the zakat on this type of debt after each hawl (one Islamic calendar year).

A bad debt is one where there is no hope of receiving repayment because the debtor is insolvent or he denies the debt and there is no proof of it. There are different opinions regarding this issue. Some scholars have said that when the lender receives payment he should pay zakat on all the previous years owed. Others maintain that when the lender receives repayment he pays zakat for one year only. Others hold that the lender doesn't have to pay zakat on it at all.

5. Increased Wealth: Wealth should be such that it produces a profit or benefit its owner. There are two types of growth in wealth; real growth and assumed growth. Real growth is similar to the growth and increase of wealth in business or in multiplication, such as the multiplication of sheep and camels.

Assumed growth is similar to the capability of wealth to grow if it is used in business projects. Jurists have made conclusions on this condition from the following Hadith: "The mare and the slave of Muslim are not subject to zakat" (Muslim). The Prophet, sallallaahu wa alayhe wa sallam, clearly avoided zakat on wealth used to meet the genuine requirements of livelihood or for personal use. Based on this, jurists have stated that the reason for subjecting wealth to zakat is its actual growth. So there should be no zakat on wealth saved for basic requirements, such as food, clothes, housing, and other basic needs.

6. Condition Of Nisab: Zakat should be paid on any amount of growing wealth that reaches nisab, which is estimated as three ounces of pure gold valued at $1990 in March, 2007.

Excessive Wealth: Moneys have to exceed the amount needed by the giver. If the person is in need of the money that he has, to cover his basic needs, then he is not supposed to pay zakat. There is no point in charging the needy. Jurists have defined the basic needs accurately and realistically. They state that it is what may protect and provide man with bare necessities to make a life, such as housing, food, clothing, etc. It also implies the inclusion of a debt from what he possesses of the nisab; it also included craft machinery, furniture, transportation or books, etc.

7. Passing Of A Hawl: A hawl, or one complete Islamic calendar year (lunar year 354 days), should pass with the wealth being in possession by its owner. This condition is related to livestock, money and commercial commodities.

Who Is Supposed To Receive Zakat

The Recipients of Zakat:
If a person does not fall into any of the following categories, then they are prohibited from receiving zakat. These people include the wealthy; the strong and healthy that are capable of working and earning; unbelievers- fathers, sons, and wives; the family or descendents of the Prophet, sallallaahu wa alayhe wa sallam, namely Banu Hashim.

1. The masakeen: These people do not have anything, so they are in need of asking others for food and clothing. Such have the right to ask and receive zakat. Others hold that these are those who may have some their basic needs. Allah says, "But he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep. And what will make you know the path that is steep? (It is) freeing a neck (slave), or giving food in a day of hunger to an orphan near of kin, or to a miskeen afflicted with misery. [90:11-16]

2. The fuqaraa: These people may have money, but it is not sufficient for their basic needs. Others have stated that these people have nothing. Allah says, "If they are Fuqaraa (poor), Allah will enrich them out of His Bounty". [24:32]

3. Zakat collectors: These are persons that the authority employs to collect the zakat. The authority gives them a fee for their work, which includes, collecting, recording, guarding, dividing and distributing the zakat.

4. Allah's cause: General opinion is that this term embraces every kind of struggle for a righteous cause. including expenditures of toward the propagation of Islam and for all charitable purposes.

5. The debtors: Debtors are those people burdened by debts because of personal needs or social necessity; such as the person who borrows to spend on himself and his family. This person is given zakat if he does not have enough money beyond his basic needs to repay his debt. However, for the one who borrows money for a social necessity; such as spending on an orphan, reconciling between Muslims, or renovating a masjid or school; then he may be given zakat to repay his debt. This holds true even if he is wealthy according to sound opinion of the jurists.

6. Wayfarer: The wayfarer is the traveler stranded in a foreign land and is in need of money to achieve his objective or return to his own country. This person can receive zakat, if the purpose for traveling were lawful. If the purpose were unlawful, then he should not receive any moneys from zakat because it would help him in his sins. Allah warns us, "Help one another in righteousness and piety, but do not one another in sins and transgression. [5:2]

7. Freeing captives: This shows that zakat can be paid in order to buy a slave and then free him or her. These slaves become free, capable of worshipping Allah, and then can become useful members of the community. The fact is in these days, the slavery, in form of buying and selling human being, does not exist. However majority of people living in poor countries suffer from economic slavery at the hand of many local landlords, rich industrialist, and multi-national corporation that exploit natural resources. We believe zakat can be used to give these oppressed people temporary relief along with essential resources to acquire training, equipment, and material (for example small business can be created through small loans).

8. Attracting hearts: Zakat is also to be paid to attract the hearts of those who have been inclined towards Islam or to prevent the harm of non-Muslims residing within the Muslim state. Scholars have agreed that this type of zakat should be considered whenever there is a need for it. We often see people who embrace Islam become detached form their families and are sometimes deprived of a source of income. These people have the right to receive zakat to protect themselves from harm and to make their faith firm.

What does reaching Nisab mean?
The method of estimating the Nisab (minimum amount liable to Zakat) is applicable to cash money, gold, silver, commercial commodities and cattle. According to a prophetic hadith, "Gold is not liable to Zakat unless it reaches twenty dinars. Once it reaches this amount, half a dinar must be paid as Zakat on it. Likewise, silver is not counted for Zakat unless it reaches two hundred dirhams. Once it reaches this value, an amount of five dirhams must be paid as Zakat on it." Based on this hadith the Nisab of gold counted for Zakat is twenty dinars (85 grams) of fine gold, while the Nisab of silver is two hundred dirhams (595 grams) of fine silver. The Nisab of merchandise is an amount whose value equals eighty-five grams of gold. No Zakat is due upon other kinds of property unless they reach their Nisab, which will be specified later on. Zakat becomes due upon reaching the Nisab or more than it. According to the Hanafi and Maliki juristic schools, the Nisab is calculated at the beginning and end of the year. Any decrease or insufficiency in between is overlooked. Any increase of property after reaching the Nisab during the year is to be included in the total sum counted for Zakat. This is considered the easiest and most applicable among the other juristic views, which has made the majority of scholars adopt it.

Who does “whose hearts are warmed to embrace Islam” refer to?
a. This is one of the eight channels of distributing Zakat, which finds a solid proof to support it in Islamic legislation. The majority of jurists held that this category has the right to receive Zakat, even though they are not in need.

b. Among the most important fields to which this portion of Zakat is dedicated are the following:

- People expected to be Muslims who adopt the Islamic moralities, but they are not yet Muslims, or those who have the ability to convince other people to embrace Islam.
- The influential bodies or individuals such as leaders or presidents who can contribute to improving the conditions of Muslim communities and minorities abroad and support their claims, or who can urge the intellectuals to defend their cause. The same applies to funds dedicated to improving the image of Islam and Muslims through assisting the afflicted non-Muslim areas.
- Those who have been Muslims for a period less than a year and are in need of support, not only financially but also morally, to cope with their new conditions of life. This can be realized through establishing social and scientific institutions to provide them with the appropriate climate.

c. There are some key points that regulate spending from this portion of Zakat, which must be taken into consideration:

- The spending in this channel should be according and leading to the aims for which Zakat is ordained.
- The spending in this channel should not affect spending in the other channels of distribution.
- Spending in this channel of distribution should be undertaken cautiously to avoid the negative aspects that may be disadvantageous to the cause of Islam or badly affect the emotions of the people who have recently embraced Islam.

d. Effective modern technologies and methods should be applied in collecting and distributing Zakat in a way to guarantee achieving the aims of Shari`ah in the best way possible.

What is ruling of Zakat on commercial commodities?
1. Fixed assets: such as machinery, buildings, trucks and equipment. All fixed assets are not liable to Zakat.
2. Intention is the criterion of considering properties as commercial commodities or not. If a person purchases a car for personal use, but may sell it if it sells good, it should not be counted as a commercial commodity. But when a person purchases a number of cars for trade, then uses one of them, the used car will also be liable to Zakat as a commercial commodity.
3. The value of commercial commodities should be estimated according to the wholesale price, whether it will be sold by retail or by wholesale. This is the view approved by the Juristic Academy in Mecca.
4. A merchant should estimate the value of his commercial commodities according to the current market rate, whether it is higher or lower than the sale price. The sale price meant here is the price when Zakat falls due.
5. If the company pays Zakat on its shares, the shareholder is not obliged to pay Zakat on his shares to avoid double payment of Zakat. Otherwise, a shareholder will be obliged to pay Zakat on his shares as follows: * If the shareholder exploits his shares in trade, the amount of Zakat due on his shares would be 2.5%, according to the market value at the time Zakat becomes due. * However, if shares are invested to obtain annual revenues, Zakat is paid in the following way: a) If the shareholder managed to examine the accounts of the company and know the amount of Zakat due on his shares, he would have to pay 2.5% as Zakat on this basis. b) If he does not have knowledge of the company accounts, he may simply add the share revenues to the total sum of his property counted for Zakat and pay a rate of 2.5% as Zakat after the lapse of a full year since the wealth has reached the allotted Nisab.
6. Though dealing in securities is not lawful, Zakat is due on their face value, which is to be added to other kinds of property, after reaching the Nisab and the lapse of a full year. The payable amount of Zakat is 2.5 %.

How do I pay Zakat on the Company shares..?
On perusing research written about Zakat on company shares, the Council of the Academy decided the following:

First: Zakat is obligatory on company shares. The company should pay Zakat on behalf of the shareholders if the company bylaws so stipulate; if its general assembly issued a decree to this effect, the company is legally obliged to pay Zakat or if the shareholder authorized the company to pay such Zakat.

Second: The company administration should pay Zakat on shares just like an individual person pays Zakat on his own money. This means that the company will consider the money of all shareholders as the money possessed by a single person. Zakat will be paid accordingly, taking into consideration the criteria of Zakat payment such as the allotted Nisab, the amount to be paid, type of funds as well as any other conditions related to the payment of Zakat. The shares on which Zakat is not due are public treasury shares, charitable endowment shares, charitable authority shares and non-Muslim-owned shares.

Third: If the company did not pay Zakat for one reason or another, the shareholder must pay Zakat on his held shares. If he managed to examine the accounts of the company and know the amount of Zakat due on his shares, supposing that the company would pay Zakat in the same manner mentioned above, he would have to pay Zakat on this basis. If he does not have knowledge of the company accounts and is a shareholder of the company with the aim of making use of the annual revenue from the shares, he will pay Zakat on his shares as if they were invested items.

According to the decree of the Islamic Jurisprudence Academy in its second session regarding Zakat on buildings and non-arable leased land, the shareholder will pay Zakat on the revenues of his shares and not on the value of the shares themselves. The amount payable is a quarter of the tithe after the lapse of a year in which the shareholder receives revenue from his shares. If the shareholder purchases such shares with the purpose of entering into commercial transactions, he would pay Zakat on them as if they were commercial goods. If a year lapsed with such shares in his possession, he would pay Zakat on their market value. If he can ascertain the market value, he will pay Zakat on the value of the shares as estimated by experienced people. He has to pay a quarter of the tithe of their value as well as on the profit, if these shares made a profit.

Fourth: If a shareholder sold his shares during the year, he would add their sale price to his money and pay Zakat on both when a year lapses. The buyer will pay Zakat on the shares in the same manner mentioned above.

What is Ruling Zakat on buildings and non-arable leased land?
After the Academy surveyed the different studies submitted about "Zakat on buildings and non-arable leased land" and after detailed discussion on the subject, the following has been decided:

1. There is no Qur'anic verse or a Prophet's Hadith which points that Zakat is due on buildings and non-arable leased land.
2. There is no Qur'anic verse or a Prophet's Hadith which points that Zakat is immediately due on the revenues of buildings and non-arable leased land.

Therefore, the Academy decides the following:

First: Zakat is not due on the value of buildings and non-arable leased land.

Second: Zakat is due on their revenues following the lapse of a year after receipt.

9 Tips on Making Your Table Eid-friendly

While making special food for Eid should be given priority this week, we shouldn't forget that part of the pleasure is in the presentation.

In other words, food served in the usual plates and dishes, on the usual bland kitchen or dinner table is simply not good enough for the family's Eid lunch or dinner. Decorating the table and "dressing up" the food will give more of the Eid feeling to your meal. Here are some tips that can help:

1. Call a family meeting

At the meeting, you can set a time where everyone is present to have a meal together. This can be lunch or dinner. The meeting is also a time to decide who does what for the meal.

2. Cleanliness

Fancy decorations are great, but they lose their appeal if the surrounding area and the table are not clean. The kitchen and dining room are two areas that should be extra clean and virtually spotless for Eid, along with the rest of the house.This should be the first priority.

3. Menu

Get the whole family to decide on a menu. There needs to be a main dish, side dishes and dessert. Appetizers can be fit in as well if everyone wants them.

The aim should be to make foods which are not normally eaten during the family's regular meals. There should also be a variety and dishes should be balanced between what different family members like, so that everyone can have at least one of their favorite ones on the table.

Try to have some dishes which are not necessarily from your specific cultural background. For instance, if your family is of an Indo-Pakistani background, why not try making Hummus with Tahina as a side dish? Or if your family of an Arabic background why not make Gulab Jamin for dessert.

4. Get a nice tablecloth

It's amazing what a nice tablecloth can do for your bland, brown kitchen/dinner table. You can buy one, but better yet, get the family member who knows how to sew best to make a fancy tablecloth.

And if they really want to be creative, they can make special place mats for each family member. These can then be taken out for every Eid family dinner.

5. Get out the best utensils

Put out the utensils you would if a special guest(s) were coming over-that means the best plates, serving dishes, etc. After all, if you've got a fancy tablecloth on the table, it's got to be matched by fancy utensils! You wouldn't wear a tie with a pair of pajamas would you?

6. Use cloth not paper napkins

Why not use cloth napkins instead of paper? These add to the formal appeal of the meal and all they'll require afterwards is a quick washing in the machine. You can store them for the next Eid as well. Make them your family's special napkins.

Match or contrast the color of the napkins to that of the tablecloth so it looks appealing.

7. Set the table according to need and presentation

You don't have to memorize all the complicated etiquette rules for eating common in formal American dinners (i.e. soup spoon here, dinner fork there, etc.) to decide where utensils and dishes should go. Balance the setting of the table between need and style.

For instance, as Muslims, the Sunnah is that we should eat with our right hand, so spoons should be on the right hand, not the left.

8. Leave enough space

Don't crowd the table with all of the dishes that are to be served. Bring them in according to the meal's sequence. For instance, when the main meal is being served, only that and accompanying side dishes should be served. There needs to be enough space for everyone to be able to sit and eat comfortably.

If you need more space for side dishes, for instance, put them on a smaller table ideally at the same level as the dinner table. This way everyone can see everything available for them to eat while having enough space.

9. Seat family members according to need

You may want to have mom on one end of the table and dad on the other. Seat everyone in the family according to need and comfort, not some specific guideline set by Miss Manners.

I would like to bring to your attention the issue of Eid ul-Fitr, a Muslim religious holiday, expected to fall at the end of this week.

As you may know, Muslims were fasting during most of October, which was when the month of Ramadan fell this year. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is notable for its emphasis on seeking closeness to God through fasting, prayer and charity. This year, Ramadan began on October 5.

Eid-ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan. It is a religious holiday and a time of joy and celebration.

Because the Islamic calendar follows the lunar calendar and actual sighting of the moon is used to determine the date of occasions like Eid ul-Fitr, there is a possibility the religious holiday could fall on Monday October 23, 2006 or Tuesday October 24, 2006 this year.

In view of this, we would like to inform you that Hafsa will be absent from school on the Thursday or Friday that is Eid-ul-Fitr. I would appreciate if you could give Hafsa her schoolwork in advance for that day, so that she does not miss any important work during her absence.

14 things to remember for Eid day

If the focus of Eid this year for you and your family is making it special, emphasizing the build-up to and the actual Eid prayer also requires preparation.

Here are some tips, etiquettes and points to remember for Eid day to make it happy and comfortable for all.

1. Prepare all clothes, maps, etc. one day in advance

Looking for the map of how to get to the Eid prayer area once you're in the car headed there is not a good idea. You may discover it's missing. That's why you need to check that you have all the necessary information about how to reach your destination one day in advance. This way, you have enough time to call for directions or buy a map.

Similarly, all clothes should be ironed the night before, since there may not be time the day of Eid, or there may be too much of a rush for the iron.

Setting the Eid table should also be done in advance, especially considering it's Eid and you want the table to look nice. It's hard to do that when you're in a rush to get to Eid prayers on time.

2. Share children's responsibilty

Decide which kids will go with which parent the day before Eid prayers. Too often, fathers dump the entire responsibility for taking care of the children on mothers' shoulders. The situation often becomes unmanageable as moms may not be able to watch all of the kids. Fathers need to take some of this responsibility.

One way of doing this is by separating the siblings who fight the most. Another is by keeping the girls with mom and the boys with dad. Or babies (birth to three years) with mom and kids (four to seven-years-old) with dad. Every family is unique so parents will have to decide how to split up the kids. Regardless of how it's done, the point is to reduce disruption for parents and for others and to keep the kids in tow.

3. Talk to the kids about proper behavior

Explain to them before going that while Eid is a time of happiness, fun and celebration, it is not appropriate to run, jump, shout and play hide-and-seek with other kids at the prayer place. Throw in an enticing reward (i.e. a promise to go out for ice cream or the park later that day if they behave) may also encourage kids to save the fun and games for after prayers.

Also explain that they must sit still and be quiet during the explanation of the prayer, during the prayer (if they are not praying) and the Khutbah that follows. Advise them to whisper in Mommy or Daddy's ear if they need anything and must talk to them.

4. Take a bag to put your shoes in

This way, you can freely move around if necessary to straighten up your line in prayer, since you won't be worrying about where you've put your shoes. Have each family member make their own bag if there's time, and get the younger kids to decorate theirs. Everyone should put their initials on the bag and remember to carry it with them at all times.

5. Take your Musallas with you to pray

Although arrangements are usually made to have a sheet or paper to pray on, encourage everyone in your family to bring their own, just in case.

6. Say the Takbirat in the car

In particular, have the younger kids lead it with everyone else following. This way, their energy and excitement will dissipate and they won't be so hyper at the Eid prayer place.

7. Go in the first line of prayer

For men, this is the best place to be if you want to catch the Imam's explanation of prayers, his Khutbah, as well as any other announcements.

Sadly, it's also the place where there is a greater chance prayer lines will be straight (things just start to deteriorate further down in the back).This is a tendency in both the men and women's sections.

8. Be quiet while the Imam is explaining how to pray

If Maryam, a new Muslim sister, is trying to understand how to do the Eid prayer, she can't exactly do that if Hafsa on her right is gabbing incessantly with her friends. Out of respect for others, we should be silent or at least whisper if necessary so we don't disturb others who are trying to understand how to do the Eid prayer.

9. Straighten your lines in prayer

Make sure to stand shoulder to shoulder and in straight lines facing the Qibla for the Eid prayer.

10. Be quiet during the Khutbah

After the Eid prayer, the Imam will give a brief Khutbah. It is highly encouraged to stay and listen to it. Even if we do have to get up and leave, we should do so as quietly as possible so as not to disturb those who are listening.

11. Greet those whom you know and those you don't

Say Salam and hug the person next to you once the Khutbah is over. Isn't it ironic that we stand so physically close to someone in prayer (shoulder to shoulder) but completely ignore them once it's over? Hug your prayer neighbor and at least wish them Eid Mubarak.

If they are alone, invite them over or get their phone number and inform them of any Eid activities that are coming up in your community. They may be new to the community and know nobody, so be as open and friendly as possible.

Abdullah ibn Amr narrated that a man once asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) what aspect of Islam was the best, and he said: You should provide food, and greet both those you know and those you do not (Bukhari, Muslim).

12. Contribute to the arrangement of the Eid prayers

Some places may pass around a box or bag seeking donations to cover the cost of renting the Eid prayer place. Give generously, since it normally costs thousands of dollars and the more the Muslim community gives, the faster Eid prayer organizers can pay back the amount.

13. Look for the Muslim leadership and congratulate them

How often do you see Muslims thanking their leaders, those poor people who work so hard for the community with minimal to no pay. Seek these people out and give them your Eid greetings. Thank them for all of their hard work for the community.

14. Get the family to help out with clean up

See if the family can volunteer to help clean up the prayer area after everyone has left. This is also a time when you may see Muslims who don't have family in the community or are new Muslims. Greet them and invite them over or at least inform them of any upcoming Eid activities.

7 ways Masjids can make Eid Special

Making Eid the joyous celebration it's supposed to be isn't just the responsibility of individuals and families. It's also the Masjid's job.

After all, where are those who don't really have Eid plans going to go? What about the brothers and sisters who are converts and have no Muslim family? Or those new to the community? Or students with family abroad?

This is clearly an area where the mosques should be stepping in. Here are seven activities mosques can organize that can help make Eid special.

1. An Eid luncheon

Nothing too extravagant or fancy. Get volunteers to help make the food. The event would be held shortly after Eid prayers.
Entertainment would be nice, but the main thing is maintaining a festive atmosphere in the community on Eid day.

2. Dinner

If lunch is too close by, try dinner. Remember, the key is make it simple. If getting it catered is too expensive, try getting volunteers to make the food.

Also, if this is planned well in advance, you can even sell tickets and make it more organized, instead of having a spur of the moment Eid meal.

3. Kids' Carnival

Kids really need to feel that Eid is special, given the hype around Christmas, and to a lesser degree, Hanukkah.

So a dinner or luncheon just won't be enough. They need rides, games, cotton candy, the works. One sister I know organizes a yearly Eid carnival and plans for it about ONE YEAR in advance.

But you can make yours simple: just get some dedicated, organized volunteers and have them arrange good, old-fashioned kids' games outside the mosque area: tag, beanbag races, etc.

And of course, have lots of candy ready to give out. If possible, simple gifts would be a great idea too.

4.Takbirat

The mosques should be resounding with Takbirat on Eid. Instead of just grabbing any brother standing around to recite the Takbirat, arrange to get a group of young brothers to do it and prepare well in advance. It could very well be the best Takbirat you've heard in your life!

5. Give extra food from the luncheon/dinner to a food bank or homeless shelter

This prevents food from being wasted and it's great Dawa. It can also open the door for future cooperation on projects of mutual concern between the mosque and the shelter.

6. Have a basketball competition outside the mosque

This would be between the Imam and mosque administrators/parents vs. young Muslim brothers. It can also be baseball, hockey or cricket if that's what everyone likes to play. The point is not to beat the competition, but to have fun, build community and Eid spirit and youth confidence in the leadership. Have kids nine and under be "cheerleaders" for the different teams.

7. Get the youth and new Muslims involved in preparing for Eid prayers at the mosque

Get them involved in mosque clean up and preparation, make them ushers who will make people's rows straight during prayers, have them make signs to post where needed in the mosque or Eid prayer place. And don't forget to consult them. This is a great way to get the future generation of Muslims and converts involved while getting necessary mosque work done.
